Additional Info
If you've never been to the Royal Albert Hall for the finals of the National Brass Band Championships you'll not know the incredible atmosphere that happens when 20 or so of the finest brass bands in the UK compete for the coveted prize of National Champion Brass Band. October 19th 2002 was no exception. Here is the all-live souvenir CD of the big day.
It has the winning test piece performance by the Williams Fairey Band. Masquerade (Philip Wilby) is a great piece of music and great test. Listen to the band's principal euphonium Morgan Griffiths soar through the famous euphonium solo in the middle of the piece. Also on the disc are gala concert items by the Black Dyke Band and the International Staff Band of the Salvation Army and the Don Lusher Big Band. And,( the reason its on this site) is the special euphonium feature 'Bravura Variations on British Folk Songs' by Peter Graham in which I played along with Derick Kane, David Thornton and David Childs and a 'surprise' appearance by the Childs Brothers. The central section is a series of improvised cadenzas, the order of which was Kane, Thornton, Mead, Childs , Childs Bros. It's 13 and a half minutes of fun and virtuosity that the audience just adored...judge for yourself on this very special live CD.
